Russell Doig was prominent for Leeds in the first half and it was he that opened the scoring in the thirty-first minute, when he was played in by Peter Swan and scored from 15 yards. Leeds were well on top and the home keeper did well to keep out shots from Peter Haddock and Keith Edwards. David Batty and Lee Warren came on at half-time. Denaby equalised in the fifty-seventh minute from the penalty spot. David Batty had a stinging 20 yard shot saved and with fifteen minutes left on the clock, Peter Swan headed Leeds back into the lead after a Nigel Thompson corner kick had been knocked on by Lee Warren, but Denaby hit back to equalize once more in the eighty-fourth minute.
